Five Town walks off with District 2 title with win over Medomak Valley

Five Town to face York July 6 in first game of state tournament

Rockport — Medomak Valley did not hand the District 2 Little League 11- and 12-year-old softball championship to Five Town on Monday, July 2 at the Marge Jones Recreational Facility: Five Town earned it.

The opponents went back-and-forth Monday night and were tied 10-10 after six complete innings, with the game set to go to extras. And Medomak Valley applied the pressure in the seventh as it plated two runs to take a 12-10 advantage.

But Five Town dug deep and pushed across four runs in the bottom of the frame and walked off with the District 2 championship with a 14-12 victory.

Five Town finished 2-0 in the double-elimination district tourney, while Medomak ended 2-2.

Five Town advances to the double-elimination state tournament, which will begin Friday, July 6 at Washington Academy High School in East Machias.

Five Town will play in the opening game of the tournament against District 4 champion York on Friday, July 6 at 3 p.m.

District 1 Acadians, District 3 Bangor and District 6 Gorham also help comprise the five-team field. District 5 does not have a representative for the state tournament.

Monday’s District 2 final originally was scheduled for Friday, June 29, but was pushed to Monday due to rain.

Scores from previous games in the tournament were: Medomak Valley 15, Oceanside 6; Five Town 14, Medomak Valley 11; and Medomak Valley 19, Oceanside 12.

The rosters for the three teams in the district tourney included:

Oceanside — Aubrianna Hoose, Jordan Hoose, Alayna Marchessault, Emma Morrison, Ava Philbrook, Madolin Ripley, Ella Willis, Jillian Barnard, Liz Barstow, Bailey Breen, Chloe Drinkwater, Morgan Gehouskey and Mackenzie Hobbs. The team is coached by Rebecca Barstow, Al Willis and Kate Marchessault.

Five Town — Lily Enggass, Josie Fitzjurls, Mary Hastings, Sierra Laukka, Alexis Leon, Violet Libby, Brenna Mackey, Elise Mahar, Kerrigan Peterson, Raelynn Roy, Madison Shoudy and Mikayla Talbot. The team is coached by Ben Laukka, Nicole Talbot and Kyle Peterson.

Medomak Valley — Katelyn Berry, Cindy Shelmerdine, Olivia Pelkey, Sarah Nelson, Kaylee Kurr, Machaeli Waltz, Trishelle Ames, Erica Waite, Hayley Puchalski, Devan Rainey, Riley Rainey, Madison Boynton, Skylar Hills and Kylie Blake. The team is coached by Mike York, John Leach and Jeff Nelson.

Five Town 14, Medomak Valley 12 (7 inns.)

At Rockport July 2, Five Town rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and walked off with the District 2 title. Regulation Little League games are six innings.

Five Town scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh, while Medomak Valley scored two in the first, three in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Leading Five Town at the plate were Enggass (3 runs), Talbot (3 runs), Hastings (run), Mackey (3 runs), Shoudy (run), Roy (run), Mahar (run) and Libby (run).

For Medomak Valley, Pelkey (2 runs), Berry (run), Shelmerdine (run), Boynton (2 runs), Nelson (run), Kurr (2 runs), Puchalski (2 runs) and Ames (run) keyed the offense.

Enggass pitched for Five Town, as she allowed 13 walks and seven hit batters, with 12 strikeouts. Kurr pitched for Medomak Valley, as she finished with nine walks and one hit batter, with eight strikeouts.

Medomak Valley 19, Oceanside 12

At Rockport June 27, Medomak Valley benefited from a seven-run fourth inning, which proved the difference in a seven-run win over Oceanside. Medomak Valley also scored one in the first, two in the second, third and sixth innings and five in the fifth, while Oceanside scored one in the first, three in the third, fifth and sixth innings and two in the fourth.

Leading Medomak Valley at the dish were Pelkey (home run, 5 RBIs), Rainey (2 singles, RBI, 3 runs), Puchalski (3 singles, RBI, run), Berry (2 singles, RBI, run), Boynton (3 singles, 2 RBIs, run), Nelson (double, RBI, 3 runs), Rainey (run), Waltz (2 runs), Kurr (2 singles, RBI, 3 runs), Hills (single, 2 RBIs, run), Waite (run) and Blake (single).

For Oceanside, Ripley (3 singles, RBI, 2 runs), Philbrook (3 singles, RBI, 3 runs), Barstow (run), Willis (single, RBI), Morrison (3 singles, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Gehouskey (run), Drinkwater (RBI, run) and Barnard (3 singles, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) paced the offense.

Berry pitched for Medomak Valley, allowing 13 hits and five walks, with four strikeouts. Aubrianna Hoose and Drinkwater pitched for Oceanside, allowing 16 hits and 14 walks, with four strikeouts.

Five Town 14, Medomak Valley 11

At Rockport June 26, Five Town held off a late Medomak Valley rally and surged to the title game. Five Town scored six runs in the second inning, four in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth, while Medomak Valley scored two in the first, one in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth.

Leading Five Town at the plate were Enggass (3 runs, 2 stolen bases), Mackey (2 runs, 3 stolen bases), Mahar (run), Laukka (run), Fitzjurls (single, run, 2 stolen bases), Leon (2 runs), Roy (run), Shoudy (2 singles), Talbot (run) and Libby (2 runs, stolen base).

For Medomak Valley, Pelkey (single, 2 runs, 3 stolen bases), Nelson (2 runs, 3 stolen bases), Kurr (2 runs, 2 stolen bases), Boynton (single, run, stolen base), Berry (run), Puchalski (single, run), Blake (run) and Waite (run, stolen base) paced the offense.

Kurr and Berry pitched for Medomak Valley, as the two allowed three hits and 13 walks, with seven strikeouts. Laukka worked the circle for Five Town, as she allowed three hits and nine walks, with 12 strikeouts.
