Union — It was, with the lively rock music blaring from the speakers, the smell of fresh burgers on the grill and beautiful fall weather, an idyllic youth football festival, a showcase of sorts, and the youngsters certainly did not disappoint with their standout play on the field.

That is because Coastal Youth Football League championships were on the line for third- through sixth-graders on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the D.R. Gaul/Union Elementary School and the hard-working, hard-hitting children did not disappoint themselves, teammates, friends, family and fans with two down-to-the-wire affairs.

In the end, on a glorious fall day in an event hosted by Medomak Youth Football, No. 2 Central Lincoln County YMCA outlasted No. 1 Oceanside 14-6 in the varsity contest, which includes players in fifth and sixth grades, while No. 1 Five Town Football edged No. 2 Belfast 7-6 in the junior varsity game, for those in grades three and four.

The head coach is Brad Galley.

Central Lincoln County YMCA varsity: Steven Baldwin, Elliott Chapman, James Fossett, Blake Grady, Carson Hallowell, Lucas Hougton, Drew Hunt, E.J. Hunt, Patrick Keene, Jayden Lafrenaye, Calbe Soohey, Chase Spinney, Tucker Stiles, Micah Tomasello, Keegan Bond, Gavin Fitzpatrick, Jasper Faryna and Hayden Friant. The head coach is Allan Tomisello.

Five Town jayvees: Judah Burgess, Kristian Hall, Cleo Johndro, Mason Moody, Kayden Rogers, Justin Batty, Levi Booker, Alec Brown, Garrett Hall, Michael Hall Jr., Jacob Harrington, Henry Pixley, Harris Stewart and Hollis Schwalm. The head coach is Keith Messengale.

The head coach is Brent Waterman.

Naomi Miller, who started and has fostered the highly-successful Medomak Youth Football program and who has been CYFL president three years, said league was formed on Jan 1, 2013 by area communities to offer a league closer to home.

"We started with teams from Boothbay Area Youth Football, Five Town Football, Lincoln County Football, Medomak Youth Football and Rockland Peewee Football. Two years ago we added Belfast Youth Football, also renamed Rockland to Oceanside and Lincoln County this year to Central Lincoln County YMCA. All communities work together and meet several times a year."

Previously, Midcoast youth football teams competed in a more more state-wide league and competed in the Harvest Bowl and often made trips to Portland for the championships.

Miller said this year's divisional sportsmanship awards, voted by officials, went to Belfast for the jayvees and Medomak for the varsity.

She said the venue for the championship games rotate between the six communities. Belfast hosted the event last year, as Oceanside won jayvee and varsity titles.

"I was told by the officials that our entire league displayed the best sportsmanship of any youth football league they officiated all year," Miller said.

A synopsis of this year's championship games includes:

Varsity

No. 2 CLC 14, No. 1 Oceanside 6

Oceanside grabbed control in the early going, but CLC stormed back in the second half and staved off a Mariner rally in the waning seconds.

Ripley scored on a right-side rush with 4:53 left in first quarter to give Oceanside a 6-0 lead. The extra-point kick failed.

Lafrenaye scored for CLC with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter to tie the score 6-6. Tomasello connected with Stiles with a pass in the end zone for the one-point conversion to make it 7-6.

With 2:59 left in the fourth quarter, Lafrenaye scored again and Tomasello hit Stiles for another one-point conversion to give CLC a 14-6 lead that held.

Oceanside did not quit, however, and battled back in an attempt to score one final touchdown, but the Mariners were stopped near the goal line as time expired.

Junior varsity

No. 1 Five Town 7, No. 2 Belfast 6

Only one point separated the opponents. Schwalm, who carried the bulk of the running load for the champs, scored in the first quarter and converted the extra-point run to give Five Town a 7-0 lead.

Belfast answered late as Lemar scored with 2:57 left in the fourth quarter, but the extra-point run was stopped, in a play which, ultimately, preserved the title and an unbeaten season for Five Town.
