Rockland — On Wednesday, Jan. 27, the Farnsworth Art Museum will present a talk by Derrick R. Cartwright, Associate Professor of Art History in the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History at the University of San Diego. The talk, entitled “Fitz Henry Lane from Castine, Maine to San Diego, California with Derrick Cartwright” will take place on Zoom from 2 to 3 p.m.

Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) was the primary painter of New England’s coastal landscapes during the mid-19th century. The Farnsworth Art Museum possesses a fine group of the Gloucester-based artist’s works. This talk will consider the work that Lane produced in Maine, with special attention to the images — oil paintings, drawings, and lithographs — he made in Castine during the 1850s. These images were freighted with meaning, both historical and personal. One of those paintings, "Castine Harbor and Town" (1851) is now in the permanent collection of San Diego’s Timken Museum of Art and will be the subject of a major exhibition there in 2023.

Derrick R. Cartwright is Associate Professor of Art History in the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History at the University of San Diego. He is also the Director of University Galleries at USD and the Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Timken Museum of Art. Cartwright has lectured throughout the world and published on a wide variety of American art and transatlantic cultural exchange topics. His previous museum experience includes directorial service at the Musée d’Art Américain Giverny, Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, San Diego Museum of Art, and Seattle Art Museum. Recent publications include "Robert Henri’s California: Realism, Race, and Region, 1914-1925" (2014) and "D. Y. Cameron: Mystic Beauty and Sacred Space" (2018). Cartwright’s exhibition, Fitz Henry Lane in Castine, Maine is scheduled to take place during the fall of 2023 at the Timken Museum of Art.

The fee for this program is $10; free to Farnsworth members. For more information or to register, visit farnsworthmuseum.org.
