Rockland — A company affiliated with Planet Fitness is considering converting the former J.C. Penney space to a fitness center.

Interior demolition is already occurring at 75 Maverick St. in the former retail space.

And emails between an architectural firm and the Rockland Code Enforcement Office show that a fitness center is being planned for the space. The emails do not name the fitness center, but the architectural firm Sargenti, based in New Jersey, works with Planet Fitness.

"Sargenti proudly partners with Planet Fitness, working closely on creating spaces that represent their brand promise throughout. We work closely with the design team, construction managers, consultants and general contractors for projects spread across North America. Our mission is to create healthy, attractive environments that are both inviting and engaging," according to Sargenti's website.

Details on the size of the fitness center are not included in the emails.

Code Officer John Root said he could not comment beyond what emails have been sent to him. No application has been filed.

An email was sent late Tuesday morning, Jan. 29, to the project manager for the fitness center project by the newspaper seeking comment. Mary Wong said she could not comment but would forward the message to the parties involved.

The property is owned by Rockland Plaza Realty Corp. of Chestnut Hill, Mass., which has owned it since the shopping center was constructed in 1961.

Planet Fitness has centers in several locations in Maine -- including Augusta, Waterville, Bangor, Brunswick, Portland, Auburn, Westbrook, Windham, Falmouth and Biddeford.

J.C. Penney closed in July 2017.
