Camden — Hundreds of visitors from across the globe made their way to Camden Harbor on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 to attend the 25th annual Camden Windjammer Festival, which featured a parade of schooners, lobster-hauling demonstrations and a variety of nautical-themed competitions for people of all ages.

On Sept. 1 dozens of children participated in the First Fish Relay Race at the Public Landing. Hosted by The First National Bank, teams of two donned rain slickers, hats and gloves and attempted to toss mackerel into lobster claw-shaped traps. Children also participated in the Build a Tiny Boat competition hosted by PenBay Pilot, while families sampled food and perused crafts on display by a number of local vendors.

As schooners made trips throughout the harbor and ferried passengers along the Camden coast, those one shore were treated to musical performances, face-painting booths and the occasional pirate sighting by Maine-based professional buccaneers Pirates of the Dark Rose.

This year's Chowder Challenge featured a number of seafood chowders from area restaurants, which diners sampled and then ranked on a ballot card. Sponsored by West Bay Rotary Club, all proceeds from the event benefited local organizations. This year's first place winner for best chowder was Graffam Bros. Seafood.

A perennial fan favorite of the festival are the Lobster Crate Races, where children (and some adults) compete to cross as many lobster crates as possible within two minutes, without tumbling into the sea. This year, 28 crates filled with seaweed were floated in the harbor by the event's sponsor, Camden National Bank. Fifty-two participated in this year's races, and some competitors were able to cross more than 300 crates within two minutes.
