Rockland — Fire crews went to 279 Main Street April 27 for a report of a fire on the roof of the under-renovation building.

A roofing crew working on the building reported to Rockland fire crews that smoke was coming from the roof.

Rockland called for mutual aid as a precaution. The report came in about 2:15 p.m. April 27.

The 279 Main St. building is being renovated and will be a Maine Sports Outfitters this summer.

The fire was in the top layer of insulation and did not enter the structure. Fire Chief Christopher Whytock praised the roofing crew for calling the department. The workers had used a couple of fire extinguishers on the insulation and removed some but that did not fully put out the fire.

Equipment used to heat the rubberized roof is believed to have caused the fire.

Park Street was temporarily closed at Union Street.
