Owls Head — Fire crews responded Wednesday, Jan. 6, to a fire at a home on South Shore Drive in Owls Head.

The home was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The house, however, was destroyed, said Owls Head Fire Chief Frank Ross.

He said the fire appears to have started in the furnace of the 1956 mobile home that has had several additions built onto it.

The fire was called in shortly before 8 a.m. Jan. 6. The property is owned Thomas Yattaw but was being rented by a family. The chief said a passerby spotted the smoke and was able to get a woman out of the house.

A Goufundme account has been created for the tenants who lost all their belongings.

The property is located at 163 South Shore Drive, near the intersection with Hendrickson Point Road.

The initial report was that there was fire underneath the home. Soon, smoke was coming from underneath and from the roof.

Crews from Owls Head, Rockland, South Thomaston, Warren, and St. George responded to the scene. The fire was extinguished in less than an hour.
