Final call for ‘Maine Wood 2018’

The last "Maine Wood" biennial offered a wide range of work.

Rockport — The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship has put out a statewide call for entries for “Maine Wood 2018.” This biennial juried exhibition will run in the center’s Messler Gallery Jan. 19 through April 11, showcasing the breadth, creativity and excellence of wood craftsmanship in the state of Maine.

Deadline for entries is Thursday, Aug. 31. All Maine artists and artisans who work in wood are encouraged to apply including furniture makers, turners, carvers, sculptors, luthiers and others. Submissions must have been made in Maine during the last five years. The primary criterion for acceptance is excellence in design and craftsmanship.

Jurors for this year’s biennial are Fabio Fernández, executive director of the Society of Arts+Crafts, Boston; Joshua Friend, editor of American Woodturner, journal of the American Association of Woodturners; and Mira Nakashima, creative director of George Nakashima Woodworker, New Hope, Pa.

Eight awards will be presented at the opening night reception. They are $300 gift certificates contributed by Downes and Reader for Best New Maker; by DMT Diamond Whetstones for Best Original Design; by Rare Woods for Best Use of Wood; by Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for Jurors’ Best in Show; by Holt & Bugbee for People’s Choice; by Rockler Woodworking and Hardware of South Portland for Outstanding Craftsmanship; by Woodcraft of Portsmouth for Best in Furniture; and by Packard Woodworks for Best Turned Object.

Co-sponsoring craft organizations for “Maine Wood 2018” include Maine Crafts Association, Maine Woodturners and Maine Woodworkers Association. Maine Home+Design magazine is the exclusive media sponsor.
