Rockland — The Rockland Planning Board approved one retail adult marijuana shop Oct. 6 and scheduled a public hearing for a second shop.

The board approved a retail shop proposed by Tammy St. Pierre on behalf of Belvidere Farmacy LLC at 185 Pleasant St. That store will be in a 216-square-foot barn-type building on the property.

The board also scheduled a site visit and public hearing June 20 for a proposed adult use marijuana retail shop put forth by Caleb Lincoln of Rockland for Botany Inc. at 409 Main St.

The storefront is located on the south side of the storefront occupied by Art Space. The address on the door states 403 Main St. but the city said the official address is 409 Main St.

The downtown building is owned by Willard and Sherry Pease.

The Rockland Planning Board has approved five medical marijuana stores. The city has a limit of six.

Scrimshaw at 500 Main St. received approval in May 2018 from the board. The store opened last year.

Highbrow at 696 Main St., the former site of a C.N. Brown gas station, was approved by the board Oct. 1, 2019.

Dirigo Medical CBD at 270 Park St., which had formerly been used by Midcoast Children's Services, and before that, by Grace Bible Fellowship, got approval Oct. 15, 2019.

On Nov. 19, 2019, the board approved the proposal by Nancy Shaw of Swanville and her business, New World Organics, at the former Bicknell Manufacturing building on Lime Street.

Maine residents chose to legalize recreational marijuana in a 2016 public vote. It took more than three years for rules to be developed. The first retail stores in Maine opened this past week.

Someday maybe we can have an annual 'Smoke Out' festival and feature Cheech and Chong as headliner.

Who would have believed back in the 70's & 80's there would someday be more weed shops than bars in Rockland?
