Rockland — Timed for Earth Day 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it is investing $487 million in critical infrastructure "that will help communities in 45 states build back better and stronger while prioritizing climate-smart solutions and environmental stewardship."

Rockland is the recipient of a $462,000 loan from the USDA to upgrade its treatment plant.

"This Rural Development investment will be used to pay for the additional costs incurred to rehabilitate the city of Rockland’s wastewater treatment facility. The proposed project will focus on the wastewater system as it is in need of immediate upgrades.

"Some of the plant's original equipment and processes are upwards of 40 years old, and the overall facility is well beyond the 20-year useful life for which it was originally designed.  The proposed upgrades, which are long overdue, will help the system operate more effectively and efficiently, as well as address the Maine Department of Environmental Protection's health and sanitary concerns.

"The upgrades included in this project represent the highest priorities identified in the city's Strategic Plan and Combined Sewer Overflow Master Plan and will have the greatest benefit to the distribution system. The proposed project will not only correct the plant's current operating deficiencies, but also help the city improve their economic development opportunities," according to the USDA.

The USDA also posted a video that included a focus on the Rockland wastewater treatment plant and longtime director Terry Pinto.

I do think a couple of hitching posts to go with the fountains would be a nice touch as well.

Seriously. Pinto Park. Wonder if the signage will have a slogan on it.

Lovely. Maybe even a couple more drinking fountains for horses and some palm trees to adorn Pinto Park.

This is not a grant. This is a LOAN of $462,000 that will be added to our budget to pay back in taxes, folks.
