Rockland — Local artist Catinka Knoth will lead a series of free drawing classes for adults on creating motifs for celebrations in February, at Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. Classes meet most Mondays at 11 a.m. in the community room, beginning Feb. 3.

Participants create art using pencil, colored pencil, crayon and papercut this month, with an emphasis on drawing in color. Each week offers a different celebration scene: Feb. 3, Chinese New Year - Year of the Rat; Feb. 10, Valentine’s Day papercuts and cards; and Feb. 24, Mardi Gras. There is no class Feb. 17, as the library is closed for Presidents' Day.

Knoth provides the classes free of charge, with materials supplied. Friends of Rockland Library hosts the public workshops. Knoth, who creates watercolors of Maine and whimsical animal scenes that she offers as cards and prints, also teaches a free weekly children's drawing class at the library, sponsored by Wendy and Keith Wellin. For more information on her work, visit For more information on the classes, call Knoth at 691-1691 or the library at 594-0310.
