Readfield — The Camden Snow Bowl middle school ski race team participated in its first meet of the season on frigid Saturday, Jan. 12 at the O’Connor Alpine Training Center at Kents Hill.

The opener for the Snow Bowl team was the Marlee Johnston Ski Race to Remember in honor of a Fayette teen and Maranacook ski racer killed by gun violence 13 years ago.

As always, participants were encouraged to wear tie-dye shirts, flower leis and tutus to memorialize the exuberant spirit of Johnston, who enjoyed racing at Kents Hill.

Taylor Gordon of Farmington Area Ski Team won the slalom event with a combined two-run time of 1:08.49, which was nearly six seconds faster than the fastest boy.

“It was cold, never getting above 15 degrees, but the snow was perfect for racing,” said Snow Bowl head coach Weber Roberts. “It was hard and fast, but grippy — if you got good edge angles above the gate.”

The CSB team includes 10 boys and 11 girls, who comprise fifth- through eighth-graders. Half of the team is new to ski racing.

“We started the season with two months of dryland training and two on-snow days at Sugarloaf this year and we have had excellent snow coverage at the Snow Bowl for training, the results of which are that all of the new kids performed exceptionally well,” said CSB assistant coach Todd Williams.

Snow Bowl's Jet Lindelof (5th) and Landon Marquis (9th) were among the top 10 for boys and Abigail Williams (6th) was top 10 for girls in a field of more than 115 overall competitors.

Camden raced against teams from Farmington (FAST), Rangeley (RASC), Gray, Maranacook (Mar), Auburn (Aub), Kent’s Hill Ski Club (KH), Oxford Hills (OH) and Mount Vernon (MVMS).

The CSB girls finished third and the boys second.
