Everyman auditions for Brecht’s ‘Arturo Ui’

Jul 08, 2017

Rockport — The Everyman Repertory Theatre will hold auditions for its fall production of Bertolt Brecht’s “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” Mondays, July 17 and 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the second-floor auditorium of Lincoln Street Center, 24 Lincoln St.

Sides from the script will be made available online and at the auditions; visit everymanrep.org or the troupe’s Facebook page, or call 236-0173, for details. Everyman will be using a brand new adaptation by British playwright Alistair Beaton from an earlier translation by George Tabori, a version that has not been performed in the United States. “Beaton’s adaptation stays very close to Brecht’s muscular verse while updating the language and being very funny and very scary,” said Everyman’s artistic director Paul Hodgson, who will be directing the show. There are a great many roles to cast, Hodgson added. This being Brecht’s allegory of Hitler’s rise to power in the guise of Chicago gangsters and cauliflower merchants, most of them are male roles.

“We will be casting many parts transgender, so if you are an actress who has always wanted to get dressed up in a fedora and wave a Tommy gun around, this is the show for you,” he said.

Performances will be at the end of October and beginning of November. Rehearsals will begin in late August.

The Everyman Repertory Theatre, founded in 2008, is a registered 501(c)3, not-for-profit theater company committed to bringing live, professional theater to the people of Midcoast Maine.
