Elsie York

Rockland — Elsie J. York, 83, died peacefully, Monday, July 24, 2017, at Windward Gardens in Camden, following a period of declining health. While a patient at Windward Gardens, she participated in the daily activities there. She was loved by the staff and other residents.

She was born in St. George April 10, 1934, the daughter of Wesley and Lena Morris Mills. Educated locally, she was a 1952 graduate of St. George High School.

On July 1, 1962, she married James B. York. Together they resided in Rockland until his passing in 2000.

For many years, Elsie was employed by MSAD 5 in the kitchen. She was a constant smiling face for all the children she met. Together with her husband, she enjoyed going to car races. She loved to go out to dinner and shopping. She was an immaculate housekeeper and an excellent cook. In her later years, she enjoyed many years as a resident at Eliza Steele Drive in Rockland with her many friends that became like family to her.

Predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Arthur Mills, Mary Francis Philbrook, Ida Mae Philbrook-Hupper and Grace Conway, Elsie is survived by her sister, Pearl Farmer, of Georgia; and many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew and his wife, Ron and Joyce Philbrook, of Owls Head. She is also survived by her husband's son, James York, and his wife, Kathy, of Owls Head.

Ron and Jo would like to thank the wonderful staff of Windward Gardens and Coastal Family Hospice for making her last year so very happy.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Seaside Cemetery, Tenants Harbor. The Rev. Ken Dale will officiate.

Arrangements are with Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Elsie's name can be sent to the Activity Fund at Windward Garden, 105 Mechanic St. Camden, ME 04843.
