Ellsworth — Seemingly, the stage was perfectly set.

The atmosphere was, in a word, idyllic, as hundreds of fans cheered every play as puffy white clouds moved slowly across the sky, warm temperatures engulfed the field and bright sunshine splashed over the diamond for a Class B North semifinal playoff showdown between No. 4 Oceanside and No. 1 Ellsworth on Saturday afternoon, June 9.

Most at the venue expected a close postseason tussle between the Mariners and Eagles.

But the hosts obviously had other plans, as they put that scenario to rest quickly when they scored early and often en route to a 12-0, five-inning victory.

With the win, Ellsworth (17-1) moves on to the regional championship game on Wednesday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, where the Eagles will play No. 2 Brewer (13-5).

The Mariners, who also defeated No. 5 Hermon 6-4 in the quarterfinals and No. 13 Presque Isle 2-0 in the prelims, finished a stellar 15-4 campaign.

The Mariners and Eagles did not play each other during the regular season.

In Saturday's semifinal playoff game, Ellsworth took control with five runs in the first inning, one in the second, five more in the third and one final tally in the fourth.

The Eagles finished with 10 hits and no errors, while the Mariners had four hits and two fielding miscues.

Matt Burnett finished as the complete-game pitching winner, as he allowed four hits, no walks, hit two batters and struck out nine.

Joey Curtis (4 earned runs, unearned run on 4 hits, 2 walks in an inning for the loss), Matt Waldron (5 earned runs on 4 hits, 2 walks in 1 1/3 innings), Uriah Thongsophaphone (earned run on 2 hits, walk in 2/3 innings) and Cole Stevens (unearned run on hit, walk, strikeout in an inning) worked the hill for Oceanside.

For Ellsworth, Jack Lee (2 singles), Jackson Curtis (triple), Jared Hamilton (single, double) and Matt Burnett (double) led the offensive charge.

For Oceanside, Logan Sheridan and Ben Ripley doubled.
