Elizabeth Dickerson appointed Appleton Town Clerk

Nov. 9 town meeting results
By Susan Mustapich | Nov 10, 2020

Appleton — Elizabeth Dickerson was appointed town clerk, and Langley Willauer, deputy town clerk by a vote of the Board of Selectmen Nov. 6.

The appointments follow the resignations of long-time Town Clerk Pamela Smith and Deputy Town Clerk Rebecca Hughes. Both resignations were effective Nov. 5.

Chairman John Fenner of the Board of Selectmen said Smith had served as town clerk for 29 years. The position is not just town clerk, but also tax collector and registrar of voters.

Hughes served as deputy town clerk and treasurer for 22 years, according to Fenner.

Smith and Hughes gave two-weeks notice of their resignations, which included staying in their positions for the Nov. 3 presidential election, Fenner said.

The town quickly advertised the positions, and was fortunate that a couple of qualified people responded by Oct. 26, he said. Selectmen were not able to fill the appointed positions until they were vacated, he explained. Dickerson and Willauer were appointed Nov. 6.

Fenner said the resignation of Smith and Hughes "was a surprise to us, and we are sorry to see them go."

Willauer had previously served as the Hope town bookkeeper.

Nov. 9 town meeting

A special town meeting was held Nov. 9. At the meeting, voters approved the use of $13,500 from the surplus fund for a new boiler for the town office.

Also approved was the use of $9,000 from the surplus fund for municipal building renovations. This article was left off of the July 14 town meeting ballot in error. The $9,000 was previously approved by voters for the town's 2020-21 town budget, and is not a new appropriation, Dickerson said.

Welcome back Lizzy.  I lived in Appleton (up on the ridge, dear) for nine years.  Have to say I really enjoyed living there. People were friendly, they had a good school and it was refreshing not to have the code office on your back every moment of the day.  Hope you find it as nice a place as I did.

Appleton residence in my opinion should be wondering why after so many years, Pam and Becky have resigned. I think it should be looked into. I also am disappointed to learn that not all 5 Selectmen voted and were included in the interview and hiring process of Langley and Elizabeth. Having said that, welcome Lizzie and Langley.

Hi Susan and readers, thank you for this nice mention, but wanted to mention that my co-worker Langley was appointed Appleton's Treasurer as well as deputy clerk. Best, Lizzie
