Camden — E. Jane Hards of 45 Washington St., died Jan. 6, 2018, at the Sussman Hospice House in Rockport. Jane was surrounded by family and friends for the last week of her life, concluding a 12-year journey with ovarian cancer.

Jane was born in Godalming, England, Feb. 3, 1950, the daughter of Edward F. and Joyce D. Hards. With her family, she emigrated first to Canada, where her sister Judy was born, and then to the U.S. in 1954. Jane spent her youth in South Paris, and went on to graduate from Northfield Mount Hermon School in 1968 and Wheaton College in 1972.

She was one of the first women to attend Dartmouth College for her senior year on an exchange program. After college, Jane worked in Bar Harbor doing research at Jackson Laboratories and then at Children’s Hospital in Boston and then decided to return to school at the University of Pennsylvania for a degree in physical therapy. As a physical therapist, she settled down in Camden, where she has lived for more than 30 years and worked for Pen Bay Medical Center affiliates. In the late '80s, she joined the Peace Corps, spending three years in Sierra Leone.

Jane has been an active community member. She belonged to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir. She also lifted her voice for a time with the Down East Singers and then most recently sang with the acapella group VOXX. Besides music, her interests included travel, reading, sewing and tinkering.

Jane was predeceased by both of her parents in 2017. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Don Mayberry, of Norway, Maine; her two nieces, Sarah Mayberry and fiancé Tim Rines of Portland, and Susie and husband Mark Hanington of South Paris; and great nephew Cash Hanington.

Funeral services will be at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 33 Chestnut St., Camden, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.
