Drivers start your engines: Wiscasset Speedway roars into action with fans

Track will host first event on Aug. 1 as fans welcomed back under safety stipulations due to COVID-19 pandemic
By Zack Miller | Jul 27, 2020

Wiscasset — For the first time in 2020, Wiscasset Speedway will welcome back competition — and fans into the track's grandstands.

The speedway announced on Facebook on Sunday, July 26 that a maximum of 200 spectators will be able to sit and enjoy cars race around its pavement starting on Saturday, Aug. 1, in four sections of 50 people.

The track is limited in how many fans can enter due to the guidelines posted by the Maine under the "Spectator Sports" addendum to "Large Gatherings," due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

The track has not been quiet the entire season, however, as the speedway has allowed vehicles on track for practice laps, but Saturday will be the first day of "normal" competition.

Ken Minott of the track stressed Wiscasset, in its 51st year of existence, did not want to begin racing without fans, even thought it could have.

There will be other restrictions on entrances, restrooms and concessions, while standard social distancing requirements will be in place.

Due to the required safety recommendations, other changes include, no smoking in the facility (fans will have to go to vehicle), no 50-50 raffle sales, no program sales, limited concessions (one may bring your own food), limited Kids Club activities, children must remain with parents on the grounds, souvenir stand will be open (limited number of customers permitted at once), face masks recommended wherever social distancing is not possible and hand-sanitizing stations will be provided throughout the grounds.

Due to the limited number of spectators allowed inside the venue, the speedway is offering different ticketing options, including a $55 VIP Season Pass, general admission ($5 per show) and pit admission ($20 per show).

VIP ticket sales run from Monday, July 27 through Friday July, 31, from 9 a.m to 5 p.m., and must be ordered by phone, using a credit card, at 207-491-3720. Callers are asked not to leave a message if there is no answer, and instead to call again.

Saturday's races will pick up where the season schedule would have stood, which is with group two. The weekly group rotation remains the same, but the spotlight races have been changed. A full race day schedule will be available on Tuesday, July 28, as well as the revised spotlight races schedule, at wiscassetspeedway.com.

The remainder of the 2020 season also will feature changes, including, no points and no championships, open draw for starting positions in all heats, start where qualified for features — except previous feature winners will start behind all non-winners and top three from previous week will start in back — a scaled payout based on car count, and after week one there will only be two rounds of practice for each division.
