Thomaston — The driver of the pickup truck that police say caused a three-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Thomaston that injured four people Tuesday afternoon was charged, the police chief said.

Nathaniel Atwell, 39, of Warren, was issued a summons for driving to endanger, Thomaston Police Chief Tim Hoppe said Wednesday.

None of the injuries were considered life threatening but a child who was a passenger in one of the vehicles suffered a broken leg, the chief said.

The crash occurred at about 5 p.m. when a 2012 Dodge pick-up truck driven by Atwell was heading north near Thomaston Place Auction Galleries. The driver told police he did not see a Chevrolet Equinox compact sports utility vehicle stop to make a left turn.

The pick-up truck struck the rear of the 2015 Equinox -- driven by Timothy MacArthur of Waldoboro, causing the vehicle to spin into the southbound lane. The Equinox struck a southbound 2018 Ford Edge sports utility vehicle driven by Matthew Anderson.

The children in his car were in car seats but one suffered a broken leg from the impact.

Thomaston police, the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Thomaston fire and emergency medical services, Warren rescue and Rockland EMS responded.

Route 1 was closed while emergency responders tended to victims. Vehicles were being towed from the crash scene at about 5:30 p.m.
