Down-to-the-wire showdown sees Windjammers knock off Panthers

Krul records double-double to lead visitors; McCormick, Cohen, Ripley pace hosts

Waldoboro — Just when you think a game is going to go a certain way, it makes an abrupt u-turn and heads in the opposite direction.

The outcome between the Medomak Valley and Camden Hills high school girls basketball teams on Thursday night, Jan. 9 could have taken any path, as the Panthers and Windjammers were in prime position with the upper-hand at one point or another, as the game unfolded.

Alas, it was the Windjammers who took hold — and held on late — for a 52-51 victory over the Panthers.

Camden Hills led 11-7 after the first quarter, 22-17 at halftime, before the Panthers grabbed a 34-33 edge at the end of the third stanza.

Camden Hills avenged a lopsided loss to the Panthers on Dec. 10 in the second game of the season, which saw Medomak Valley cruise to a 54-29 victory in Rockport, but a new year brought with it a "new" Windjammer squad.

"What a game by both teams," said Windjammer coach Kim Kuhn. "Everybody fought hard. We are coming. We may be in last place [in Class A North], but we are scrapping, working hard and improving."

"[The game was] really exciting," said Windjammer senior Kaylyn Krul. "Our freshmen really stepped up too, and that was fun to see. We almost fell down, but instead of making more mistakes we came back for a change, which was really amazing to be a part of."

"We battled back, but we didn't play our best game," said Panther coach Ryan McNelly. "We had some certain kids in the first half that were nonexistent, but we talked to them, and they really stepped up in the second half, but we had moments where we had mental lapses."

Thursday's contest had some of the same intricacies as the first meeting between the teams, as Camden Hills and Medomak Valley combined for 54 turnovers and 35 fouls — compared to 48 turnovers and 37 fouls in the first clash — in a fast-paced up-and-down-the-court-style of play.

A host of Panther and Windjammer players stepped up in the second half, as the dynamic of the game changed hands almost every possession, but it was Krul who iced the game after her missed free throw, with an offensive rebound and layup with 10 seconds to play.

"[Krul] wanted it and she got it," said Kuhn. "She hasn't beaten Medomak [Valley] in many, many years through grade school and high school, and she said she wanted this last game before she graduates. She's been our warrior, and our little engine that is keeping us together. She's out there giving it all to help us win."

"I just had to focus on what I could add instead of scoring," said Krul. "Sometimes I would get flustered [about having to score], but instead I just focused on what I can add, which was defense, and it just started coming."

"I think we were up four or five [points] with a couple minutes to play, and we talked about time and scoring, but we just gave the ball away with two consecutive possessions, and that kind of kills you," said McNelly. "Camden [Hills] played one of the best games, but right now we are at gut-check time and need to decide which way we want to go."

Krul finished finished with a double-double (13 points, 13 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals), while Ella Graffam (10 points, 2 rebounds), Mila Bonometti (10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks), Grace O'Connell (7 points, 4 steals, 2 rebounds), Ella Powers (6 points, 3 rebounds), Audrey Bowman (4 points, rebound) and Bailey Curtis (2 points, 3 rebounds) all had strong showings in the win.

Sadie Cohen (12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 assists) and Addison McCormick (12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) led the Panthers, with Autumn Ripley (11 points, 3 steals), Abby Lash (5 points, rebound, assist), Alyssa Creamer (5 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals), Kayla Donlin (4 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 assists), and Zaniah Puchalski (2 points, steal) played key roles.

Camden Hills was 18-of-21 (85 percent) from the foul line, while Medomak Valley was 9-of-18 (50 percent).

The Panthers could not find their groove in the first half, as the Windjammer defense stymied the hosts, while the visitors built a lead which held strong into halftime.

"In the beginning of the game we talked about getting to the rim, and then seeing the little kicks off of that," said McNelly. "I say adjustments [out of halftime], but I said the same things at the beginning of the game. [Camden Hills] is a very aggressive team, and they will come through to the ball, but if you keep the ball moving, you will have some open looks, which we finally did have in the second half."

Medomak Valley turned its play around in the third quarter and slowly chipped away at the Camden Hills lead until the Panthers regained control when the hosts forced a turnover, and Ripley found Creamer for a layup to put Medomak Valley ahead 30-29.

From there the offenses traded buckets — and the lead — up until the horn sounded for the final time.

With 51.3 seconds to play the game was tied 48-48, but Graffam drove the baseline and converted a layup to give the visitors a two-point lead at 50-48.

On Medomak Valley's next possession, the Windjammers forced a jump ball, as the possession arrow pointed in their favor, but Medomak Valley forced a turnover at midcourt and called a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Cohen went up for a shot and was fouled, and hit the floor hard, but got back up and made her first free of two throws to bring the Panthers within one, as Camden Hills called its final timeout.

The second free throw bounced off the rim, but a foul was called against Medomak Valley, which sent Krul to the line for a one-and-one.

Krul missed her free throw, and as a Panther and Windjammer player sbattled for the loose ball, Krul snagged it and had an open lane to the hoop, where she converted the layup, to put the visitors up by three points.

Medomak Valley brought the ball up the court with less than 10 seconds to play, and needed a trey to tie the game, but converted a two-point bucket, as the horn sounded.

"I try to keep as many timeouts as I can, but I didn't have any" said McNelly. "[Time and scoring] has really been one our problems, and to know what's happening. I yelled for a three, and hoped we could get a foul called, but she wasn't really fouled, so what are you going to do."

"Our defense is so much better," said Kuhn. "Our first three or four games we weren't locked in on defense, but since [we played] Hampden Academy we've been playing some amazing defense."

"We saw some things we did poorly tonight, and we know the things we did well," said McNelly. "We are going to try to erase the poor things and make the better things better. We threw a couple different defenses at [Camden Hills] to try to mix things up, which I don't think hurt us tonight, but I don't know how much it helped either."

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class A North, Medomak Valley (4-6, 17.8395 points) is sixth, while Camden Hills (2-8, 8.5802 points) is 12th. Gardiner (9-1, 43.1481 points) is first in the 12-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
