Down the Chute Beer & Wine Challenge new at toboggan weekend

Jan 15, 2013

Camden — The 23rd Annual National Toboggan Championships are going to be held at the Camden Snow Bowl Feb. 8, 9, and 10. This event has been growing in popularity since its inception and organizers have worked tirelessly to keep it fun and fresh every year, and 2013 is no exception.

The ‘First Eva’ Down the Chute Beer & Wine Challenge’ is the newest event to be added to the weekend’s line-up of activities. It will be held Friday, Feb. 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Snow Bowl.

The idea was dreamed up by several members of the West Bay Rotary Club of Camden who were looking for a way to pay for the rental of the tent used for their Chili Challenge (which takes place on Saturday during the Nationals). The idea of a beer and wine challenge, featuring Maine brewers and vintners, seemed like a natural fit and after much research and many meetings to ensure the integrity of the event, Down the Chute was born.

All profits from the Down the Chute will be donated back to the Camden Snow Bowl in memory of Jeff Kuller and Rotarians Ken Bailey and Don Gross, all recently passed long-time supporters of the Snow Bowl and the National Toboggan Championships.

The Down the Chute Beer & Wine Challenge is open to people aged 21 and older. Tickets are limited and can be purchased for $20 in advance at or at the door for $25 until they run out.

For their admission price participants will receive a “First Eva’ Down the Chute Beer & Wine Challenge” glass and 12 tickets, which can be exchanged for samples of beer and wine that will be provided by more than a dozen Maine breweries and wineries.

In addition to being able to sample local beer and wines, participants will also be able to enter their names into a raffle drawing for prizes being donated by the brewers and vintners, test their skills at mechanical bull riding, vote for their favorite brewer/vintner, and purchase logo-wear commemorating this First Eva’ event.
