From the desk of Events Coordinator Kasey Bielecki,

When I think about my time at Pope Memorial Humane Society, there are always stories that stand out.

There was the afternoon a distraught couple came into the shelter. They were out walking their dog and found a kitten caught in a tree trunk. They knew something was wrong but didn’t know what to do, so they brought the kitten to PMHS.

After a careful examination by our cat team, they knew it was most likely a broken leg. The staff brought the kitten to the veterinarian for an official diagnosis and further medical care.

The look on everyone’s face was shock and aww when the kitten came back to the shelter with a cast on her leg as big as she was!

There was a dog that came into the shelter with skin issues. The fur the dog did have was sparse, and you could see how red and dry his skin was. It took multiple vet visits, medicated baths and a diet change for this guy to heal up. He found his new home, continued to heal and is now the best brewery dog at the Pour Farm in Union.

If you’ve met Barley, the dog, you’ve met an awesome dog.

What do these stories have in common? Both of these animals required medical care above and beyond the standard care. They needed multiple vet visits, medication, follow-up vet visits and more.

At Pope Memorial Humane Society, we do whatever we can to ensure the animals in our care are healthy and ready for adoption; this means the vet bills add up.

Bring in the Sherman Medical Fund. The Sherman Medical Fund was created to support the medical treatments needed by shelter animals. Everything from standard spay/neuter procedures to broken bone repairs, tumor removals, skin issues and more.

Hundreds of animals are helped by the Sherman Fund every year, and if you give now, your donation will be matched 100% up to $10,000! Donate at, and make sure you mark your gift for the Sherman Fund.

If we can raise the full amount and have it matched for a total of $20,000, it will cover the first quarter of medical bills for local homeless pets in need at Pope Memorial Humane Society.

Thank you for thinking of Pope Memorial Humane Society and the animals in our care. A reminder, the shelter is closed to public visits but all programs and services, including adoptions, are happening by appointment. Fill out the online adoption application at or call 594-2200 with questions.
