Domestic assault, endangering children top Knox County court news

Dec 01, 2017

Rockland — The court docket was packed this week as sentences were handed down in cases that included domestic violence assaults and endangering the welfare of children.

The following cases were completed in Knox County courts from Nov. 27 through Dec. 1.

Ricky D. Miller, 36, of Warren, was sentenced to two years in jail with all but six months suspended and placed on probation for two years for felony domestic violence assault Sept. 3 in Warren. He received 90 days for criminal mischief, while domestic violence terrorizing and domestic violence criminal threatening charges were dismissed.

In this case, police reported that Miller was intoxicated, grabbed the victim, pushed her, and threatened her with a knife.

Jonathan J. Sevon, 43, of Friendship, was given a three-year suspended jail term and two years' probation for felony domestic violence criminal threatening Sept. 17 in Friendship. He was given 90 days in jail for criminal threatening. Sevon also received 289 days in jail for violating probation on prior domestic violence assault and cruelty to animals cases.

In the latest incident, according to an affidavit filed in court by the Knox County Sheriff's Office in September, Sevon threatened to kill a woman and her children and burn down the house with her in it.

In other cases heard during the week, Nickie Ripley, 30, of Belfast, was given a suspended 180-day jail term for endangering the welfare of a child June 18 in Appleton. She was also placed on probation for a year. A charge of operating while license suspended was dismissed.

According to an affidavit filed in court by the Knox County Sheriff's Office, the woman was allowing her 5-year-old boy to be on his own for hours at the Sennebec Campground. Other campers reported rescuing the boy when he fell into the water.

Terms of the probation include that she take parenting classes.

Dominic J. Gioia, 37, of Camden, was sentenced to 364 days in jail with all but seven days suspended for endangering the welfare of a child June 29, 2016, in Camden. According to Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Baroody, Gioia had entered into a deferred disposition a year ago in which he agreed to conditions that include substance abuse counseling. Gioia met the conditions and did well during the past year, so that a drug possession charge was dismissed. The charge stems from Gioia's overdosing on drugs while taking care of a 2-year-old. The sentence agreement had called for Gioia not to serve more than 21 days in jail if he met terms of the deal. The prosecution asked for 21 days at this week's sentencing hearing, while the defense asked that all the jail time be suspended.
