Thomaston — Sometimes a game comes down to one play — and a few seconds.

For the Oceanside girls soccer team, those choice seconds came in the second half on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 6 against high school athletic rival and neighbor Medomak Valley at Pendleton Field, as the Mariners earned a hard-fought, early-season 1-0 win.

Both teams are 2-1 on the young campaign.

With 13:02 remaining in the contest, Oceanside’s Hope Butler got free behind the Panther defense in pursuit of a loose ball in the box. At the same moment, Medomak Valley goalie Kayla Donlin came out of the net in an attempt to pick up the ball, and the subsequent seconds that followed decided the contest.

The ball glanced off Butler’s right leg, and deflected toward the right side of the field. In the footsteps that followed, Butler collided with the right side of Donlin, which sent Butler to the ground.

The official blew the whistle and ruled a foul on Donlin, to the dismay of the Medomak Valley players, coaches and fans, to set up a Mariner penalty kick.

Oceanside’s Abby Veilleux buried the free kick into the left side of the net, to give the hosts a 1-0 lead, which, ultimately, proved  the winning goal.

“In my opinion my goalkeeper was going for the ball,” said Medomak Valley coach Brianna Morrill. “That’s what I saw and I think 90 percent of the people saw that too, but it’s out of our control. I’m not a referee. I hope [the referee] knows that happened to us last year too. It’s out of our hands, but we had plenty of chances where we could have finished, but it didn’t go right for us today.”

“I see it as I thought I was going for the ball, but I don’t know what the referee saw,” said Donlin. “He obviously thought I tripped [Butler], but I didn’t mean to trip her. I did stop the ball, but it didn’t go my way that game.”

“I hate to see any game decided by that,” said Oceanside coach Rene Dorr. “It’s unfortunate that [Donlin] came out. One team is going to see it one way, and the other team is going to see it the other [way]. I thought [Donlin] came over and hooked [Butler’s] leg, but I can understand why [coach Morrill] doesn’t [see it that way]. It’s unfortunate it had to end that way, but I’ll take the [win] any way I can get it.”

Oceanside held a shot advantage of 12-5 over Medomak Valley, as well as 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Donlin made 12 stops in net, while Oceanside keeper Raechel Joyce made five.

The first half did not provide many sparks for either team, as Butler provided the best opportunity to score.

With 22:45 to play in the opening half, Butler had a good look from about 15 yards, but her shot went just wide left of the net, to keep the goose eggs locked in the score columns.

The second half was a different story, however, as the opponents had multiple chances to score before the penalty kick took place.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Panthers had a strong opportunity to take the lead, when Stephanie Morse crossed the ball across the face of the net to Annie Vannoy, but Vannoy’s shot sailed wide right.

The Mariners had the next chance to break the scoreless tie, as Butler streaked down the sidelines and connected on a left-footed shot, but the ball was just off target, rolling wide of the net.

“I think a lot of things didn’t go our way today,” said Morrill. “Oceanside did a wonderful job beating us to every ball. They played harder than us today, and that’s what it came down too.”

“I’m really happy with the girls and how they played,” said Dorr. “I was very pleased with how they possessed the ball, passed up front and attacked the goal and [our] defense was starting to get it together.”
