Rockland — Try as they might, the hard-working, pesky Oceanside girls lacrosse team simply could not get over the hump and realize victory during its first five matches of the spring.

That all changed on rain-soaked Wasgatt Field on Tuesday afternoon, May 15.

Despite terrible overall conditions, which included heavy rain and a slippery playing surface, the Mariners slogged past visiting, winless Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 10-2.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class C, Oceanside (1-5, 0.8333 points) is 11th, while Lake Region of Bridgton (6-1, 47.9167 points) is first in the 12-team division. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

In Tuesday match, the Mariners were paced by Gabby Straka (2 goals), Emily Tyler (2 goals, 2 assists), Nicole Ladd (2 goals, assist), Hope Butler (2 goals, assist), Taylor Hamlin (goal, assist), Kristina Ferguson (2 assists) and Mattie Hooper (goal).

Lydia Laslavic made seven saves in goal for Oceanside.

"Our elusive first win was a gained by a stellar team effort," said Oceanside coach Angie Vachon. "Our young defensive line backed each other up like teams that have played together for quite some time. More often than not, it was a seamless pick up of an offensive player and they did a great job keeping them out of the critical scoring area."

The coach said Laslavic turned in her finest performance of the season, "with her hard steps to the ball, confident saves and smart clearing of the ball. Our midfield and hedging attack men moved the ball well in their effort to beat the Eagle defense to our scoring end.

"Nicole Ladd did a fine job in her playing of every aspect of the game today, from her offensive ball movement, using transition defense to help stop or slow down the ball and then having strong defensive midfield coverage for her team.

"Mikayla Gleba, Lydia Ross, Grace Cody and Jordan Beal did a super job with hustle and pressuring the ball with a teammate with turnover-causing double teams. There was smart play from end line to end line for the Mariners, with flicked balls recovered by teammates, double teams and the implementation of what we have been focusing on in practice … the team used it all very well against the Eagles."

Vachon said Lincoln Academy's young team, under a new coach, "did a really nice job on Wasgatt Field in this rain-soaked game."

Maddie Shaw had timely saves in goal for the Eagles and Brinley Harrison and Ellie Matthews, both with goals, "had fast field running with nice stickwork and the team had some nice ball movement all-around. The Eagle defense did a fine job protecting the eight-meter as well."

Finally, the coach said, "I would like to commend Gillian Lindsay, our statistician, for her steadfastness and focus minding the scorer’s table for us in that pouring rain. It is not an easy task with this fast-moving game to begin with and to have to sit in that rain was above and beyond for her team."
