Billy Connolly and Dame Judi Dench star in “Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown,” which tells a shocking (by Victorian standards) tale of the widowed Queen Victoria.

Thomaston — Friends of the Thomaston Public Library presents its Friday Night Film Series with screenings Fridays at 6:30 p.m. in the community room of Thomaston Public Library in the Thomaston Academy Building, 60 Main St./Route 1. April’s films celebrate Two Great Dames — British actors Maggie Smith and Judi Dench.

The April 12 film is, "Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown," a 124-minute film from 1997. Grieving widow Queen Victoria (Oscar nominee Dame Judi Dench) withdraws into sadness for years until plainspoken manservant John Brown (Billy Connolly) disrupts her mourning. But as their friendship grows, it results in personal and political ramifications for both of them. Exquisitely filmed and fueled by sparkling performances, director John Madden's period drama brilliantly portrays the woman behind an empire and the man who helped her live again.

Friday Night Films are open to the public and free of charge, but donations are gratefully accepted. Light refreshments will be served. The Thomaston Academy building is handicapped accessible from the rear entrance. For more information, call the library at 354-2453.
