Call for ‘Artists’ Choice’

Davenhill juries for River Arts

Apr 19, 2017

Damariscotta — River Arts on Route 1 invites artists throughout Maine to submit artwork for jurying in its upcoming exhibition, “Artists’ Choice.” Artists can submit up to three works in any medium including sculpture, photography, collage, painting, ceramics and fine craft — representational or abstract.

Work can be delivered anytime during gallery hours until the deadline, which is Saturday, April 29, at 4 p.m. An opening reception will be held Friday, May 5, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The juror for this show will be Charlotte Davenhill, owner of the Tidemark Gallery in Waldoboro for 12 years. She said the call to curate is richly rewarding for her as it reflects her gallery’s original mission to serve the artists in its community. Both the making and the curating of art are about making decisions, she said. For her, this is the meaning behind the words, Artists’ Choice.

“Joys and sorrows have been shared. Lessons have been learned. Mainly, it's truly a labor of love — a work that will never be done as long as there are artists among us with the vision, the courage, the energy and the generosity of spirit to show us what they see,” she said.

Artists may submit up to three works for an entry fee of $20, $15 for members. Artists will be notified by email or phone of the juror’s decision. Submissions may not have been shown at River Arts previously. Entry forms are available online at and at the gallery, 241 Route 1, when submitting.

All work entered must be for sale. Wall-hung work size maximum is 60 inches in height, 42 inches in width; for safety reasons, Plexiglas or other nonglass options should be used. All works should be presentation-ready and labeled with title and artist’s name on the back. River Arts recommends that artists frame their works using standard wall frames, complete with picture wire.

Queries and requests may be directed to River Arts at 563-1507 or by email at River Arts is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
