Bath — Medomak Valley track-and-field student-athletes finally got back in the game on Wednesday, April 28 after the Panthers' initial high school meet with the Shipbuilders was postponed.

And the Panthers made quite an impression, including one young man who broke a school record that stood four decades.

Connor Daigle, a junior, broke the school 3,200-meter mark with a blistering 9:48.37. He bested a standard set by Stacy Bryant at 9:56.80 in 1982 — 40 years ago.

"After having a very disappointing cross-country season which was cut short due to our school contracting the virus, which led to me being snubbed from the All-Sate and all-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference teams because I wasn’t allowed to race in any postseason meets, I had so much to prove. A chip-on-my shoulder-type mentality is what I had as from October to April my training consisted of running 60- to 80-mile weeks with three days being days I would hit the weight room. I knew from my training I would be capable of doing some great things this season but I didn’t know that I was capable of breaking a school record right from the gun.

"Getting the school record in the 3,200 meters was definitely a goal I had coming into the season but it is also not the only goal I have. I hope to break the school record in the 1,600 some point down the line as well as taking home state titles in either the 1,600 or 3,200 (or both) as well as KVAC titles for the 1,600 and 3,200 too later this year. I also plan to run in a few invitational meets out of state later this June.

"I would like to thank my coaches George Gould, Chuck Nguyen and Katlin Puchalski for pushing me every day at practice to getting me to be the runner I am now. I would also like to thank my friends, family, and my faith in the Lord for supporting and helping me get to this moment in my running career. Like I said, with the cancellation of my cross-country season 'this is only the beginning.' I hope to find even greater success as my track season unfolds. I am so grateful to be playing the sport I love again."

Also Wednesday, the Panthers girls earned a victory in Wednesday's makeup meet and Medomak Valley secured a bundle of top finishes.
