Rockland — A Cushing couple have been charged with embezzling more than $10,000 from a motel they managed.

James W. Pierce, 52; and Shannon E. Pierce, 46, were arrested over the weekend and charged with Class B theft. The indictments against the Pierces allege they stole more than $10,000 in money from October 2016 through October 2017 from the Starlight Lodge at Seven Mountains Motel in Rockport.

Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Baroody declined to specify exactly how much was stolen,  but said it was more than $10,000. The Pierces were managers of the motel. The two were indicted Nov. 14 by a Knox County grand jury, but the indictments were sealed until their arrests. Rockport police investigated the case.

Bail was initially set at $1,000 for each of the Pierces. At their arraignments Monday, Dec. 3, both Pierces pleaded not guilty to the theft charges.

Judge Susan Sparaco set bail at $250 cash for James Pierce and personal recognizance for Shannon Pierce. Baroody had asked for $1,000 cash bail for James Pierce, pointing out that he was on a deferred disposition for an assault charge. In addition, when he was arrested he told the officer he believed he was having a heart attack. The officer took him to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport and left while Pierce was being treated.

Pierce left the hospital and was found a few hours later by a Rockland police officer who arrested him and took him to the Knox County Jail in Rockland.

Defense attorney for the day Marina Sideris said he was on heavy medication when he left the hospital and he was not running away, but simply walking along Route 1.

Sparaco said she did not hold that against Pierce, since the officer had left and she did not think Pierce should be expected to call police on himself when he left the hospital.

The two are next scheduled to appear in court Jan. 31.
