Rockland — “Frankenstein” (by Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley) returns to international cinemas this Halloween, to mark the 200th anniversary of Shelley’s most famous novel. Locally, broadcasts will be presented at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., Mondays, Oct. 22 and 29. Show times are 2 and 7 p.m. both days.

Two dates are needed, for good reason. Directed by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle (“Trainspotting,” “Slumdog Millionaire”), “Frankenstein” features Benedict Cumberbatch (“Hamlet,” BBC’s “Sherlock”) and Jonny Lee Miller (“Elementary,” “Trainspotting”) alternating between the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creation. Cumberbatch plays the Creature in the Oct. 22 shows, and Miller does so in the Oct. 29 broadcasts.

Captured live in 2011 from the National Theatre stage in London, this thrilling, sold-out production became an international sensation, experienced by almost half a million people in cinemas around the world. Scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this deeply disturbing classic tale.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the increasingly desperate and vengeful Creature determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

“Frankenstein” runs about two and a quarter hours. Tickets are $12, general admission. For more information, visit rocklandstrand.com; call 594-0070, ext. 3; or email info@rocklandstrand.com.
