Rockland — For the first 24 minutes of Tuesday night's Class B North girls basketball prelim playoff game between No. 8 Oceanside and No. 9 John Bapst of Bangor, the high school contest looked as though it would come down to a final possession.

The final eight minutes of the court affair though told a different story, as the Crusaders' offense hit on all cylinders, while the Mariners struggled to get the ball through the hoop, as the visitors left Rockland with a 52-40 victory on Feb. 11.

The victory advances John Bapst (11-8) to the quarterfinals, where the Crusaders will face No. 1 Hermon (17-1) on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena in Bangor.

Oceanside's season ended at 13-6.

The Mariners and Crusaders did not meet during the regular season.

Oceanside led 13-12 after one quarter and 24-21 at halftime, while John Bapst held a 38-35 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Audrey Mackie led the hosts with 16 points, while Grace Woodman added 12; Molly Gould, eight; and Anna Kingsbury and Abby Waterman, two. Mackie netted four treys and Woodman one. Gould is the team's lone senior.

The Crusaders had nine players score a basket, led by Jamey Satterfield and Sydney Ellis with nine points, while Savannah Libby and Lacey Scanlon had seven; Kate Harriman, five; Jamie McQuarrie, Jayda Smith and Emily Mock, four; and Jenna McQuarrie, three. Satterfield, Ellis and Scanlon made one 3-pointer.

The Mariners were 1-of-6 (16 percent) from the foul line, while John Bapst was 11-of-17 (64 percent) from the charity stripe.

"We struggled in the second half offensively," said first-year Oceanside coach Matt Breen. "We were getting [shots] around the rim in the first half, but they weren't falling [in the second half].

"We had to execute better and work on our spacing. It's a young team, and it's too bad it ended the way it did. I feel bad for [Gould]. She's given me so much in just the one year I've been coaching."

Despite poor shooting Tuesday night, the talent is prevalent on the Mariners, as five freshmen play varsity, with Mackie and Waterman among the starting five, with Gould the only senior.

More talent is in the wings, as the Oceanside seventh- and eighth-grade girls swept the Busline League titles this season.

On Tuesday, the visitors held an 8-2 lead three minutes into the game, after Satterfield stole an inbounds pass and scored on a layup.

Gould answered with a bucket, followed by Woodman's layup, when she drove the lane and got fouled, but missed the free throw, to bring Oceanside within two points.

After a John Bapst basket, Waterman's shot fell off the rim, but the Mariners got the offensive rebound, and Mackie hit a base-line jumper to tie the score 10-10.

Mackie followed her jumper with a trey, which gave the hosts their first lead, 13-10, with 2:10 to play in the opening stanza.

The game stayed within a handful of points into halftime, but out of the intermission, the Mariners played strong defense on John Bapst's first two possessions of the second half, which was followed by Mackie's second trey of the game, to push Oceanside out front by six points.

"We always try to get Mackie going," said Breen. "I thought we could exploit some things with [Woodman], and we did a good job with it in the first half, but in the second half [John Bapst] made some adjustments, and we struggled shooting the ball."

That was the largest lead for the Mariners, but it was short-lived.

Ellis spun in the paint and put up a shot, which missed, but corralled her own rebound as her second shot fell through, to cut the Mariner lead to two.

On the ensuing Oceanside possession, Woodman drove the lane, got fouled, and made one-of-two free throws to push the hosts' lead to three.

The Crusaders tied the score on their next possession, when Scanlon hit a three, which bounced out of the cylinder and fell back into the bucket, to knot the score 30-30, and kickstart a 7-0 run.

The visitors were on the attack again with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter, as Libby fed Smith for an uncontested layup, as the Crusaders retook the lead.

The Mariners did not counter on their next possession, but Scanlon drove through three Mariner defenders for a layup the next time down the court to complete the run, as coach Breen called a timeout.

Mackie stopped the bleeding with a trey from the top of the key out of the stoppage, to bring Oceanside within one.

Despite the fact the Mariners hung tough, the visitors used an 8-0 run to close out the third quarter and start the fourth, to hold a 44-35 lead with 5:40 to play.

John Bapst held the advantage the rest of the way, as Oceanside could not get its shots to fall.

"I have to put [the team] in better positions," said Breen. "It's my fault. I should have done better getting my scorers the ball, and where they needed to be. [The team] did a great job for being a young group, and that's all you can ask."
