South Thomaston — Icy roads are considered a contributing factor to a two-car crash Tuesday evening, Jan. 9, that closed Route 131 in South Thomaston for about a half-hour.

According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, a 2008 Ford truck heading south that was driven by Phil Arsenault, 34, of Tenants Harbor, spun off the road due to icy conditions. The front end of the vehicle, however, was sticking out into the travel lane.

At that time, about 5:45 p.m., Melissa Hopkins, 32, of St. George, was also traveling south in a 2006 Ford sedan and, again due to the icy road conditions, was unable to stop in time to avoid the truck and struck it.

Hopkins' three children were in the car with her.  There were no injuries reported by anyone involved, according to the Sheriff's Office.
