Court finds for plaintiff in lobster co-op theft case

Rockland — Justice Jeffrey Hjelm issued a civil court ruling Jan. 11 for $10,377 for attachment against the property of Robert Thompson, 51, of St. George, JP's Shellfish Inc. of Eliot, and its owner, John Price.

The lawsuit was filed by the Spruce Head Fisherman's Co-op against Thompson, the former manager, and defendants.

Although the co-op claimed that Thompson and defendants stole nearly $180,000, Hjelm said the evidence would only support $10,000 in losses. This is the minimum value of the lobsters that Thompson sold to JP's Shellfish, Inc., but failed to account for the deliveries to the co-op or its members, the court said.

Thompson has been charged with felony theft in Knox County Superior Court. He is accused of stealing more than $10,000 from the co-op.

Thompson's wife, Cindy, was cleared in the case.
