Rockport — The tennis courts at the Midcoast Recreation Center were packed over the weekend with superb tennis and positive spirit, said Seth Meyer, facility tennis director.

That was due to the annual New Year’s Open, held the first weekend of January and a USTA-sanctioned tournament that featured talented players from Maine and other New England states.

In the women’s draws, Caitlin Cass of Newcastle defeated Jo Lindsay of Tenants Harbor, 6-2, 6-3, in the singles final. In doubles, Lindsay and Marnie Read of Warren defeated Betsy Kingsley of Cushing and Allyson Poutasse of Rockport, 7-6, 6-2, in the final.

On the men’s side, Mike Burke of Lewiston defeated Jai Aslam of Belgrade, 6-4, 6-4, to take the singles title. In doubles, Seth Meyer of Camden and Noah Capetta of Camden defeated Isaac Salas of Camden and Aslam, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the final.

“We had a large number of players in the event this year” said Meyer. “It’s always a fun weekend filled with great tennis.”
