From the desk of Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Gould:

Summer is winding down and September is almost upon us. It’s the perfect time to think about volunteering here at the shelter. If you are in interested in direct animal care, we have volunteer positions open in both the dog and the cat areas. We also have a number of upcoming events and we always need volunteers’ help to make them a success. If you would like become a PMHS volunteer, attend our next new volunteer orientation  Sept/ 14 at 11 a.m. here at the shelter. I hope to see you there!

My pet pick of the week is Copper, an adorable 3-year-old neutered male Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix. With his soft, fluffy coat and big brown eyes, Copper inspires visions of the perfect little “purse dog.” Let me tell you, though, inside that pint-sized frame is a serious dog. Copper does not want to be cuddled, he does not want to be carried and he does not want to be smothered in kisses.

He’s a tough little dynamo that likes to stay busy and he can keep up with anyone and anything. This little guy is smart as a whip and needs activity. He would be the perfect dog to accompany his owner around the barn, helping with the chores and intimidating the local rat population. No hanging out on the couch and watching TV for Copper. After a busy day, Copper is perfectly happy to jump in your lap and snuggle up, but it needs to be on his terms. After all, an important little dog like Copper has to retain his dignity! So if you are looking for a pint-sized companion with an outsize personality, come by the shelter and ask to meet Copper.

Finally, our annual “Eat for Pete” fundraiser is coming up Sept. 19. Lots of fabulous local restaurants will be sharing a portion of the evening’s proceeds with Pope Memorial. Celebrate the end of summer with a meal out and help support your community shelter. Participating restaurants may be found on our website at humanesocietyofknoxcounty.org.
