Congratulations to chamber award winners

By The Courier-Gazette Editorial Board | Nov 08, 2018

We would like to say congratulations to all of those business and community leaders who were honored Saturday night, Nov. 3, at the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce Year in Review Awards Gala at the Samoset Resort.

This is an amazing event that we cover each year. More than 350 people, most of them civic and business leaders, attended the event, and many worthy folks were honored for the ways they have given back to the community.

In the Camden area, we were pleased to see Alison McKellar honored with the Environmental Leadership Award. She has been working very hard to help with a number of causes in the community and volunteers her time to serve as a selectperson for the town.

Briar Lyons and Ladleah Dunn accepted the new building award for the beautiful new Lincolnville General Store, which has been a tremendous addition to the community.

Numerous local businesses were recognized for the length of time they have been here, notably French & Brawn for 150 years in business and Morse's Sauerkraut for 100 years.

Robin McIntosh was honored with the Community Service Award for her work with Midcoast Leadership Academy, and Kate McAleer accepted the Innovation in Business Award for Bixby & Co., Rockland's own craft chocolate company.

Other honorees included Pies on Parade, Save Oceanside Fields, LAUGH loud SMILE big, and the schooners Boyd N. Sheppard and Ladona.

Of course we were also pleased to see Courier Publications owner Reade Brower named Community Person of the Year. He was recognized for keeping the lights on at our local hometown newspapers in 2012, which maintains about 40 jobs locally and provides an important community service. He was also recognized for the many ways in which he gives back and, as he puts it, "pays it forward," organizing local running events for causes, helping with Go! Malawi, and with One Community, Many Voices.

The chamber event overall has evolved. This year's event included video presentations that showcased the work each of these winners is doing and captured a bit of each one's unique personality.

The event also brought together a large number of people, allowing us the opportunity to accomplish great things in the coming year through unity, cooperation and a sense of shared values.
