Puerto Rico student trip fundraiser

ROCKLAND — This April, the Spanish III class at Oceanside High School West is making an expedition to Puerto Rico. This is a group of seven eighth- and ninth-graders who have worked hard to be in an advanced Spanish class. The group hopes to have a cultural and language immersion experience, and visit several historic and natural sites, such as the Spanish fort El Morro, museums in Old San Juan, and El Yunque rain forest.

The group is planning their own trip and itinerary in order to keep costs down. Each student is paying $1,400 for an eight-day trip. Student tour companies charge $3,000 or more for this type of trip.

To help raise money, there will be a Live Auction and Dessert Buffet on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Rockland. The dessert buffet is $5, and there are several great auction items, such as gift certificates to restaurants like Café Miranda and Primo, museum memberships, a handmade toboggan, and earrings from Michael Good Gallery valued at $750.
