Collagraph printmaking weekend at Sweet Tree

Oct 11, 2017
“Sheep” is a print by Kathleen Buchanan, who will lead a weekend collagraph printmaking class at Sweet Tree Arts.

Hope — Midcoast artist Kathleen Buchanan will lead a weekend collagraph printmaking class for artists, adults and high school, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22, at Sweet Tree Arts, 4 Church St.

A collagraph is a form of printmaking in which where artists build collages of paper and acrylic to use as a printing surface; the collage plates are rubbed with ink and run through a press to create beautifully textured images. Students will be introduced to all the basics of printmaking, learning how to design and construct a collagraph plate; how to choose inks and paper; and how to operate an etching press to create the print.

Saturday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) is dedicated to an introduction to the medium and building printing plates, while Sunday (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) will be spent printing an edition of images. No prior experience is necessary; anyone who can cut and glue paper can create a collagraph.

Class fee of $250 includes all materials. For more information and to register, visit sweettreearts.org or call 763-2770.
