Collage art in Good Tern café

Mixed media works by Robin Yale Brawn of Lincolnville are on view this month at the Good Tern in Rockland.

Rockland — For the month of June, the Good Tern Co-op Café Gallery presents mixed media collages by Robin Yale Brawn of Belly Button Designs in Lincolnville. The public is invited to meet the artist during a reception Friday, June 23, from 5 to 6 p.m.

Brawn began creating collage art as a teenager. This passion took on a new life when she started creating cards for family and friends, as "store bought cards" seemed too expensive and didn't have the desired sentiment. Over the years, the creations took the form of altered books, assemblages and custom paperweights.

Last year, Brawn started drawing faces, which she had done in high school but found her inner critic much stronger than in her younger years. So, she kept going back to the drawing board until she felt ready to add faces to the collages.

Brawn has been inspired by the art of Laly Mills, Kelly Rae Roberts and Anahata Katkin. She said she also feels blessed with incredibly supportive and encouraging friends so that even though she is nervous, she is excited about putting her art out into the world.

Good Tern Natural Foods Co-op, 750 Main St., is open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 594-8822.
