Class A Camden Hills sails past Class B Panthers in renewed soccer contests

Longtime athletic rivals used to face off consistently when both played in Class B

For the first time in three years, the Camden Hills and Medomak Valley soccer teams met on the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 3, as each high school squad hoped to improve their playoff positions as the regular season winds to a close.

In the end, the Class A Windjammers emerged victorious over the Class B Panthers as the Camden Hills girls posted a 6-1 win in Waldoboro and boys a 3-0 victory in Rockport.

Girls soccer

Camden Hills 6, Medomak Valley 1

At Waldoboro Oct. 3, the Windjammers remained unbeaten with a victory over the Panthers. Camden Hills held a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Kris Kelly recorded a hat trick in the victory and also added two assists for Camden Hills, while Eliza Roy (goal, assist), Lexi Heidorn (assist), Kassie Krul (assist), Ella Pierce (goal) and Kaylyn Krul (goal) also chipped in on offense for the visitors.

Medomak Valley’s score came on a Camden Hills own-goal. The Windjammers held a 16-2 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"Medomak [Valley] did a nice job pressuring the ball and double-teaming,” said Camden Hills coach Meredith Messer. “We had to work to distribute the ball and did a better job in the second half staying wide. Kris is very hard to contain and she stepped up today again scoring and distributing."

The Windjammers continue to dominate opponents, to the tune of outscoring foes 71-7, with five shutouts, in 10 games.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class A North, Camden Hills (9-0-1, 74.4898 points) is second, while Brunswick (10-0, 92.9082 points) is first in the 12-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Medomak Valley (1-9-1, 11.0969 points) is 13th, while Caribou (9-0, 81.8878 points) is first in the 21-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Boys soccer

Camden Hills 3, Medomak Valley 0

At Rockport Oct. 3, the Windjammers netted a shutout victory over the visiting Panthers. Camden Hills led 2-0 at halftime.

Ben Owre scored a pair of first-half goals for the Windjammers, while Bryce Tyler (goal), Elliot Matlack (assist), Marshall Merriam (assist) and Michael Blackwell (assist) also chipped in on offense for the hosts.

Lucas Boetsch made two saves on two shots in goal for Camden Hills, while Aiden Starr made eight saves on 20 shots in goal for Medomak Valley. The hosts also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

"It was nice to get a chance to renew an old rivalry today and we were happy to get the win,” said Camden Hills coach Ryan Hurley. “This is our toughest week of the season and we hope to recover in time to play our best Thursday when we go take on a Hampden [Academy] team that will be playing hard for the win."

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class A North, Camden Hills (5-2-2, 46.5816 points) is fourth, while Bangor (10-0, 112.9592 points) is first in the 12-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Medomak Valley (5-5-1, 18.4184 points) is 14th, while Mount View of Thorndike (9-1, 67.1939 points) is first in the 21-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.
