Celebrating new edition of ‘Baby and Child Care’

Oct 09, 2018
Dr. Spock and Mary Morgan spent many seasons living on their boat in Rockport Harbor.

Rockport — The Barn Swallow Book Shop, 166 Russell Ave., will host a special book signing Saturday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. in light of Simon & Schuster’s Oct. 2 release of the 10th edition of “Dr. Benjamin Spock's Baby and Child Care.”

The book, originally published in 1946, is America's most famous and most influential guide for young parents to any and all issues that come up in the raising of young children. Dr. Spock and his wife Mary Morgan were very frequent harbor-residents of Rockport, and Morgan still likes to hang out in town for part of every year.

At the Book Shop, Morgan will speak about the late Dr. Spock's life and career including his winning of a gold medal at the Olympic Games; his political activism; and his advocacy of a gentler, better informed, more understanding upbringing of many children in the several generations of the second half of the last century.

Dr. Robert Needlman, M.D., co-author of the last three editions of “Baby and Child Care,” also will be at Barn Swallow, addressing the changes that have been made over the years in the particulars of a vision, which, by and large, has proven resilient and persuasive.

The event and reception is free and open to the public. Barn Swallow Book Shop is in the village, adjacent to the former CMCA location.
