Rockport — If the Camden Hills boys lacrosse team’s season-opening high school match against visiting Brewer was an indicator, the Windjammers could be in for a smooth sail in 2021.

The Windjammers held a lead throughout the majority of the Tuesday afternoon, April 20 contest, only for the Witches to battle back and tie the score in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

Then, the hosts scored five of the game’s final seven goals and held off the visitors to the tune of a hard-fought, 13-10 victory.

“We were able to compose ourselves for the final quarter and our offensive leaders were able to finish the game for us by getting the ball moving faster and working for the higher quality shots,” said Windjammer coach Harrison Rogers.

Leading Camden Hills' attack were Levi Guay (3 goals, 4 assists), Willy Doehla (4 goals, assist), Charlie Griebel (2 goals, assist), Nolan Delehey (goal), Jackson Fitch (2 goals, 2 assists), Even Fagonde (goal) and Noah Quensel (assist).

Rory Carlson, Elias Libby and Fitch collected seven ground balls and Griebel five.

Camden Powell made seven saves on 17 shots on goal for the Windjammers and Jake Parker 23 saves on 36 shots for the Witches.

Rogers said Libby and Carlson performed well defensively and “played a vital role in helping us clear the ball from the defensive to offensive end.”

“We just need to work on taking that extra second and finishing our shots in front,” the veteran coach said. “We are looking forward to building on this win and improving both defensively and offensively before our next game against Erskine on Saturday at home.”

The Windjammers, unlike many programs, have strong numbers despite the season off last spring due to the pandemic, as Camden Hills boost a combined 30 players in the program. Ten of those players played ice hockey this winter for Camden Hills, which won its “pod” championship.

In 2019, Camden Hills was young with seven underclassmen among the 10 as starters, but came on strong at the end of that season and netted a prelim playoff victory over Mount Blue of Farmington before falling to eventual state champion Yarmouth in the quarterfinals.

This year, senior captains Griebel and Guay figure to lead the charge for Camden Hills as Griebel compiled 16 goals and 14 assists two years ago and Guay 12 goals and 17 assists, which Fitch and Cooper also should be impact players, the coach said.

Doehla “will bring offensive goal-scoring ability to the team,” while Delehey “will take faceoffs again, kill penalties, play great one-versus-one defense and have a big role on our offensive end of the field," the coach said.

“Nolan is the player that does everything for our team,” said Rogers.

Delehey and Sylvan Eichenlaub also are captains for Camden Hills.
