Now that blue skies and warm weather have been upon us for a month, the construction of the new school is progressing at a strong pace. Sometimes I feel like I am in the middle of a Richard Scary book with all the activity, equipment, machinery and trades people around! Some windows have been installed in the academic wing as they work to close in the building. In the academic wing, walls and ceilings are being roughed in, drywall is being installed and taped. We are very close to all detail work on the steel structure for the entire building being done and only have a couple more slabs to pour in the gym area. Numerous inspectors are coming and going to make sure everything is up to standard. Installation of exterior siding is also about to begin on the academic wing. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for continued sun!

In the front half of the building, under-slab utilities are being completed and the slab has been poured in the kitchen, cafeteria and theater. Roofing over the theater and auditorium is now complete. On the site, steel for the baseball field backstop has been erected, grading and loam is completed and grass is starting to grow! Work will begin immediately on the playground foundations, contours, and features, including equipment and hardscape and temporary mulch will be put in place to stabilize the ground. The hope is that the grass on the playground will take hold quick enough so that we can open the playground at the start of school in 2020.

Although we had some heavy rain events in June, the erosion control measures continue to be successful. As the sediment ponds fill, they are pumped out and mulch on the site also absorbs the rain. Filter bags around the perimeter also make sure that whatever water reaches them is filtered before flowing off site.

Our Take-a-Seat fundraising campaign was successfully launched in June. You can support the new Camden Rockport Middle School by naming a seat in the Bisbee Theater. You will make a lasting impression and support education, athletics and the arts. This will be the last local school project for multiple generations, so don’t miss this chance to show your support for years to come. Get one before they are gone! Here is the link to buy your seat(s) in our beautiful new auditorium:

Also, we are offering building tours to the public on Monday, Aug. 26, at 9 and 10 a.m., and 5 and 6 p.m. There are 12 slots per tour so if you are interested in taking a peek at the new building, please sign up by calling 236-3358 and asking for Robin or Wendy.

I guess the request for donations for seats in the theater is a better way to go then trying to tap the tax payer well again on this school project.
