CAMDEN — On June 30, Jeff Chen, owner of Camden Island Chinese Restaurant, was greeting everyone who came in the door, on the fourth day of the new restaurant's soft opening.

Over the past six months, Chen has created a remarkable restaurant, with spacious booths and table seating, lighted backdrops with changing colors, a golden chandelier hung from the cathedral ceiling, a lighted bar and lounge, and a private dining area.

The large menu offers specialty dishes that include lobster, Chinatown-style dim sum served all day, Hong Kong, Singapore and Cantonese-style rice and noodle dishes. American Chinese food favorites are also well-represented on the menu, including General Tso's Chicken, sweet and sour pork, chicken and shrimp, Chow Mein and Chop Suey, chicken fingers and teriyaki.

Chen would like everyone to feel welcome, comfortable and have a good time at Camden Island, and to know that the food is not expensive. The menu includes lunch specials served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and dinner specials served all day.

He still has a lot of training to do with staff, he said, and is aiming for high quality service.

Chen also owns Chinese restaurants in Skowhegan and Pittsfield. He was traveling through Camden with his brother last year, when he saw that 87 Elm Street was for lease. He noticed that the people in town were "friendly and very nice" and wanted to open a restaurant here, he said.

The staff in Camden's town office have been helpful to him in bringing in a new business, he said. He thanks all of the staff in the Planning and Code Office and the Fire Department, who helped him through the permit and licensing process, and with numerous onsite inspections.

The restaurant hours are 10:30 a.m. to 12 a.m., seven days a week. Chen said the kitchen will be open until 12 a.m.

Camden Island Chinese Restaurant is located at 87 Elm Street, and has onsite parking. The telephone numbers are 230-8683 and 230-8678.
