Rockport — In sports, there is an adage that states, "It is not how a team starts a game, but how it finishes that counts."

Apparently, the Camden Hills girls basketball squad took that expression to heart as they stayed the course after trailing visiting Belfast throughout the first quarters, only to weather the storm and rally for a 44-40 high school court victory on Wednesday night, Feb. 17.

Belfast, which netted an eye-opening and impressive (especially for high school play) 17-of-23 free throws (74 percent), led 14-9, 23-16 and 32-30 at the quarter breaks, before the Windjammers went on a 14-8 push over the final eight minutes to secure the victory.

In this pandemic-altered campaign, Camden Hills improved to 2-6, while Belfast dropped to 4-6.

Ella Powers paced the Windjammers with nine points, while Bailey Curtis and Ella Graffam added seven; Molly Hixon, six; Mattie Luce, five; Tessa Whitley and Molly Shook, four; and Sierra Laukka, two.

Camden Hills made 7-of-17 foul shots (41 percent), including 6-of-14 (43 percent) in the fourth quarter. Powers connected on the team's lone trey.

For the Lions, Lillie Mitchell scored 14 points; Jaiden Philbrook and Madison Farris, six; Halle Tripp, five; Hailee Lindelof, three; and Kara Richards and Lindsey Goughnour two.

Belfast netted 17-of-23 free throws, including 10-of-13 (77 percent) from Mitchell and 4-of-6 (67 percent) from Philbrook. Tripp connected on the team's lone trifecta.

While Mitchell's six points in first quarter, balanced team scoring in the second and Tripp's three-pointer in the third helped carry the visitors to a two-point lead after three stanzas, the Windjammers made enough plays — and foul shots — down the stretch to pull out the win.

In fact, Powers and Graffam tallied four points and Curtis and Luce three in the pivotal fourth for the Windjammers. Hixon and Shook tallied four points in the first quarter, Powers hit a trey in the second and Whitley chipped in four points in the third to keep the hosts in the contest.

In other statistical areas, Powers finished with four assists, four steals, three rebounds and two blocked shots, while Luce added six rebounds, two assists and two steals; Whitley, six rebounds and two blocks; and Curtis, seven caroms.

For the Lions, Farris grabbed seven rebounds and Waldron and Tripp four. Mitchell also finished with two rebounds, four assists and six steals, while Philbrook contributed three steals.
