Castine — The Camden Hills Regional High School sailing team won its second straight state championship over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13, at Maine Maritime Academy.

Team members include Jessie Mann, Connor O’Farrell, Molly McClellan, Hugh Levitt, Simon Morin, Courtney King, Emmett Acosta, Calvin James, Emerson Brott, Amelia McClellan and Thomas McClellan. The team is coached by coach Debbie Schreiber.

In what is termed the Downeast Regional Championship, Camden Hills won the title for the second straight year. After battling against Falmouth, Camden Hills prevailed by a 104 to 118 margin. Mount Desert Island finished third at 189.

Skippers Levitt and Morin, with crews Acosta, King, Mann, Amelia McClellan and Brott dealt with blustery and shifty conditions Saturday and light spotty to medium breezes Sunday.

Sailors tactical and boat handling skills were challenged, the coach said. Finding a favorable position on the starting line, being on the correct side of the course, catching the shifts and the ability to maneuver the boats, all contributed to the teams success, she said. Fourteen teams from Maine competed for the trophy.

Combined with the state championships was the Downeast Invitational Regatta. Nineteen schools from throughout New England competed. Marblehead High School of Massachusetts won the title with Taber Academy of Marion, Mass. second, Belmont Hills of Belmont, Mass. third and Camden Hills fourth.

The Butch Minion Sportsmanship Award was given to Emily Lau of Islesboro High School by Betty Minion in honor of Betty’s brother, Butch.

The championships were hosted by Maine Maritime Academy and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.
