Camden Hills reclaims top seed, bests Maranacook-Winthrop

Windjammers bounce back nicely from lone loss to Greely

Kents Hill — Fresh off its first loss of the campaign, the Camden Hills ice hockey team was back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 against Maranacook-Winthrop at the Alfond Athletics Center.

The Windjammers wasted little time getting on the board, netting a goal 39 seconds into the game and sailed to a 5-1 win over the hosts.

Jack Orne had two goals and an assist to lead Camden Hills, while Grayson Szumilas (goal), James Annis (goal), Jonah Cameron (goal), Parker Lawson (assist), Matt Prescott (assist) and Josiah Simko (assist) also chipped in on offense.

Nate Bowers scored for Maranacook-Winthrop on assists from Nick Lacasse and Jared Hansen.

Windjammer coach Karl Enroth said it was a “nice bounce-back game for us” after the loss to the Greely Rangers of Cumberland.

“Maranacook-Winthrop did not go away and when they got their power-play goal they had some momentum,” Enroth said. “Fortunately we were able to bear down and put in a couple late goals to seal the game.”

Zach Hand made nine saves in goal for Camden Hills, stopping three in the first period, two in the second and four in the third. Josh Ehirobo made 25 saves for Maranacook-Winthrop, stopping eight in both the first and second periods and nine more in the third.

Camden Hills outshot Winthrop 30-10, including 9-3 in the first period, 10-2 in the second and 11-5 in the third.

The 'Jammers were 2-of-7 (28 percent) on the power play, while Maranacook-Winthrop was 1-of-4 (25 percent).

Camden Hills was whistled for seven minor penalties for 14 minutes, while Maranacook-Winthrop committed 10 minor penalties for 20 minutes.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Western Class B, Camden Hills (10-1-1, 56.7515 points) is first in the 10-team region. The top seven teams qualify for the playoffs.

The individual scoring included:

First period

CH 1-0 at 14:21 goal — Szumilas (assist Orne, Lawson). Szumilas shot from the net front.

Second period

CH 2-0 at 12:05 power-play goal — Orne (unassisted). Orne collected the pick off a turnover in the neutral zone, skated down the left wing and cut back to the mid slot and shot low past Ehirobo.

CH 3-0 at 11:57 goal — Annis (unassisted). He knocked in a loose puck in front of the net.

Third period

MW 3-1 at 7:37 power-play goal — Bowers (assists Lacasse, Hansen). Bowers shot from the left blue line point beat Hand.

CH 4-1 at 6:12 power-play goal — Cameron (assists Prescott, Simko). Cameron in front of net tips in a Prescott slap shot from the right blue line point.

CH 5-1 at 2:27 goal — Orne (unassisted). Orne gained possession of the puck along the left side boards, raced down the ice and beat a defender to the net. Orne shot past the goalie as Orne skated from left to right through the low slot.
