Belfast — A cold shooting night can dampen a team's experience on the hardwood, but when both squads have a difficult time putting the ball in the basket, well, the outcome can swing in either direction.

The Camden Hills and Belfast girls basketball teams tangled in a preseason high school court affair on Tuesday night, Dec. 4 as the opponents' scores reflected the frigid temperature outside. However, the visiting Windjammers generated enough heat in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 42-30 win.

Camden Hills led 9-4, 19-16 and 27-21 at the quarter breaks. The Windjammers tallied 15 points in the fourth quarter, which nearly eclipsed their output from the first half.

Belfast, guided by coach Scott Benzie, include seniors Julianne Smith, Mackenzie Banks, Shera Hilt, Payge Shute and Karagen Stone; juniors Hannah Banks, Kayci Faulkingham, Grace Fitzjurls, Sydni Moores and Junne Robertson-McIntire; and sophomores Lindsey Goughnour, Lillie Mitchell, Kiara Doolan and Madison Farris. Madison Warman also is a member of the team but her grade was unavailable.

Camden Hills, coached by Kim Kuhn, include senior Kassie Krul; juniors Audrey Bowman, Kaylyn Krul, Miranda Dunton and Grace O'Connell; sophomores Anya Babb-Brott and Seanna Montgomery; and freshmen Olivia Brown, Tessa Whitley, Ella Powers and Mila Bonometti.

Kassie Krul led Camden Hills, and all scorers, with 18 points, while Montgomery chipped in seven; Kaylyn Krul and Bowman, six; Whitley and Dunton, two; and O'Connell, one.

Doolan led the Lions with nine points, while Mitchell and Hilt added six; Fitzjurls, three; Banks and Stone, two; and Farris and Moores, one.

Belfast made 8-of-13 free throws (62 percent) and Camden Hills 7-of-12 (58 percent). Neither team connected on a 3-pointer.

The game was tight at the start of the fourth quarter and the Windjammers' lead shrunk  from the get-go.

Doolan sank a jumper 15 seconds in, which cut Camden Hills' edge to four, but that is as close as Belfast got.

The Windjammer defense buckled down, and forced four straight steals, which resulted in five points, to push the visitor's advantage to nine.

Doolan answered with another bucket to cut the hosts' deficit down to seven, but the ensuing Windjammer possession saw Kassie Krul sink a floater in the lane to counter.

Turnovers and ball tie-ups for the foes ran down the clock, and Kassie Krul grabbed an offensive board and hit a layup to push the Windjammer advantage to double-digits in the final two minutes.
