Calling All Boat Builders

By Belfast Rotary Club | Aug 15, 2017

The National Boat Building Challenge is looking for teams to enter in this year's August 19th competition during the Belfast Harbor Fest. It is fun for all and no previous boat building experience is required.

THIS JUST IN - In 2017, The National Boatbuilding Challenge will issue a DESIGN AWARD OF $250 for the boat judged to be of the highest quality.

The rules are simple:

  • Teams of two compete to build a wooden boat in less than 4 hours

  • Power and hand tools may be used, but not pneumatic tools

  • All materials are provided except for oars (which must be handmade), and the transom, which may be glued but not cut

  • All teams are provided with the plans ahead of time

  • At the end of 4 hours, the boats are judged on completeness and quality of craftsmanship

  • The builders must have enough faith in their work to get into the boat and complete a relay race in the harbor

For the $100 entry fee, each team receives plans and building materials, a workspace and competes for First, Second and Third place prizes of $500, $300 and $200 respectively.

Teams provide their own tools, work tables, and oars plus transom blank.

The competition will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 19 at Steamboat Landing in Belfast.
