Call for squares for Union Fair quilt raffle

Feb 20, 2020

Union — The Exhibition Hall at Union Fair/Maine Wild Blueberry Festival, Aug. 22-29, is promoting a queen-sized quilt themed around “Flowers of Maine.” The quilt raffle proceeds help with the premiums and little extras that make the Exhibition Hall more attractive and encourages more participation through the displays of art, photography, quilts, fancy work, flowers and vegetables.

In addition, the Exhibition Hall hosts cooking contests each day. Several local granges, Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water, Union Historical Society, the Lincoln County Quilts of Gratitude, the Midcoast Lyme Disease Support & Education group and some local needlework groups proudly show the work that they are involved with.

Organizers are soliciting 12-½ inch squares from interested quilters to make up this quilt. The style of the square and the technique used is entirely up to the quilter, keeping in mind the theme: “Flowers of Maine.” The quilter should also keep the design/pattern within the 12 inch square to allow for the ½ inch seam allowance. Blocks will be incorporated into the quilt as space permits. The quilter(s) should not put their name on the front of the block.

Each square will be numbered as they are received and will be voted upon by visitors to the fair. The three top squares with the most votes will receive a monetary prize. The quilt itself will be on display at the Exhibition Hall during the fair and will be awarded on Saturday, Aug. 29. Tickets will be $1 each or six for $5.

All squares should be completed and sent/delivered to Linda Billings, Superintendent of the Exhibition Hall, by June 30, at P.O. Box 992, Jefferson, Maine 04348-0992. The quilter should also include their name, address, phone number and e-mail address. For questions, call 549-7207 or email

The Union Fair/Maine Wild Blueberry Festival is located on the Union Fairgrounds, just off Rte. 17 in Union,  and will be held from Aug. 22 through 29. For more information, visit
